Transfusion medicine involves vein-to-vein processes delivered by a network of health providers. High quality, cost-effective, patient-centred transfusion services depend on clinical guidelines, policies and procedures that meet or exceed existing and emerging standards and regulations.

Information is provided below for regional health authorities, health professionals, hospitals and other regional health facilities. The Blood Shortage Management Plan (see Related Documents) helps hospitals and health regions develop and maintain a contingency plan for activation when shortages occur.
