Diabetes is a serious health problem that affects a growing number of Canadians. The population is aging, physical activity is decreasing, and rates of obesity are rising. All of the factors contribute to the dramatic rise in the prevalence of diabetes.

Saskatchewan is facing a rapid growth in the numbers of people diagnosed with diabetes. The facts about diabetes in Saskatchewan and its impact are staggering:

  • 38,124 people were diagnosed and living with diabetes in 1996
  • Approximately 3,200 people are newly diagnosed with diabetes each year
  • By 2002, there were more than 47,000 people diagnosed with diabetes in Saskatchewan
  • About 23,000 or more people have diabetes and remain undiagnosed
  • The total annual cost for health care for an individual with diabetes is approximately 2 to 2 ½ times the total cost for the same individual not yet diagnosed with the condition

Uncontrolled or poorly controlled diabetes can lead to complications including diabetic eye complications, kidney disease, nerve damage, heart disease, increased risk of lower extremity amputations and premature death.
